Imperialism in Africa

Imperialism: When stronger countries take over weaker countries political, economic, and social life. Like when Europe took over Africa because the Africans were weak in political, economic, and social life.

In 1850 Africans were divided into hundreds of ethnic and language groups. Africans followed traditional beliefs, others came and tried to convert new people to Islam and Christianity. African land was difficult to travel until the Steamship. Even though they were divided they were able to keep out the Europeans for more than 400 years.

Europe wanted African land because there was an abundance of raw materials and natural materials. They needed those materials for more factories and new markets to sell the stuff they have taken from the Africans.

Africans allowed Europeans to take over land because other European countries were also coming for Africa. This meant that the Europeans invited others expect the Africans to say that they had claimed the land. They needed the land and they thought they were Superior to everyone or that they were better. They feared war amongst themselves which created the Berlin conference.

The Zulus stood up to the Europeans with spears and shields, against rifles and guns. The Dutch and British wanted land to start farms but the Zulus stood up and said no and the Dutch and British fought.
